I used the washer from a garden hose. You can get a pack of 10 for about $1. You don't even need to remove the shift boot itself. Just unscrew the shift knob and push the washer down. I put 2 or 3 on. Works like a charm.

Did you have to push the washers inside the boot or are the washers sitting on top of the boot? Sorry, it's unclear to me. Do you have pictures?
