Default Shifter Question...Pics Added

Quick question, I replaced my shift lever about 4 months ago since I kinda screwed my original one when I was trying to make a custom short shifter.

I then purchased a used OEM shifter on ebay. Im not sure if it was from an ap1 or ap2 but it should be the same.

So I installed which took around 20 minutes and everything seemed fine. My friend this past weekend drove my S around and noticed the shifter seemed to be a bit off from where its suppose to be. When looking at the shifter, its a bit slanted to the left which is normal but also a bit foward. When on neutral, the shifter is not directly in the middle but a bit foward so when your shifting to 1-3 or 5, your almost htting the front of the console. When going to 2-4-6, it looks like then like its directly in the middle.

When installing the shifter, I saw that there was only one way it fit since it has particular groves.

Is there a way to adjust the shifter postion or can something else be wrong. Other than the position, the car runs fine without any issues.

Also, when pulling out the shifter, is the little fork piece on the bottom suppose to be on the left side.

Thanks in advance for any help

I had my console apart the other day and noticed that the shift lever isn't centered and isn't perfectly vertical, but I thought it was slanted a little to the right. Maybe you need to rotate it 180 degrees?

Thanks for the post. Thats what I thoguht but it seems to go only one way unless there is something I can remove or adjust that i dont see. When reinstalling a shifter or shot shifter isnt there only one way it goes in and connects?

yeah they can only go in one way, the little fork thing is on the left side. Did you get the proper nylon pieces on the shifter when you got it - two nylon parts ? , if either was missing that could throw things off. Did you put the spring in place before installing the shifter ?. The install is basically foolproof as it can only go in smoothly one way due to the grooves you mentioned. I can't confirm that all shifters for all years are interchangeable though, so you should try to find that out in case you got one from an incorrect model year and they turn out to be non-interchangeable. Check majestic Honda online parts listing to see if all years use the same shifter part.

I remember a plastic round piece on the bottom of the fork that goes into the transmission but the 2nd one Im not sure which one your taking about. The spring was installed fine from what I know. It shifts perfectly but just a bit foward. I had a friend drive it this weekend and he noticed it.

yeah there is a small nylon ball right at the bottom of the shifter that goes into the tranny part, the second nylon part is larger and wraps around the shifter ball in the middle section of the shifter, higher up from the bottom nylon part.

Whoa that definitely looks whack. The only way I can figure it's so far forward, is if the shaft is bent. Check this thread for some pics of the OEM shifter.
