Sounds silly, but...

If you want to be in vtec longer, get 4.3 gears or higher! The shorter ratio means that when you upshift you will be farther into the vtec range (wont fall out as easily). And as far as highway cruizing goes, lower ratio gears with our engine will actually have a negative impact on your gas mileage. Do to the fact that the engine runs rich at lower rpm's and doesn't make the torque to traverse hills with a lower gearing in 6th you will either need to townshift or give more gas to climb even gentle slopes, both of which will increase fuel consumption.
Do a quick search on rpm and gas mileage on this forum and you'll find a few threads that agree that you actually get better gas mileage as you get closer to vtec (around 5k) due to the fact that the stock ecu leans out the A/F just before vtec.

If you want to stay in VTEC longer, why not look into increasing your redline? Swap in an AP1 ECU for a 9200 rpm fuel-cut or get a standalone and you can set your fuel-cut to whatever you want.

Our cars are already slow enough as it is, now we are trying to make it slower?
The top speed wouldn't increase much, not to mention it would take even longer to get there.
Switching the gears would make VTEC feel and perform weaker, you're better off driving the car the way it was made.
