I don't want to remove the center divider. My presumption is that it's there for a reason, everything in that box seems so over-engineered that it's insane and the box's cost per unit would be much lower without it, so they must have left it for a reason. Whether that reason is sound or performance, I don't know. If I find another airbox, i'll pull the divider on it, but I don't want to accidentally gimp my car.

I'll definately try insulating it, but I think i'd be better off with the heat-reflective material on the outside of the box. I do believe that yes with more airflow, low-speed airtemps could remain low. I don't believe the divider or resonator affect air temperatures at a guess though.

Does anyone sell an inexpensive cooling plate? It'd be an interesting addition to the experiment.

Sounds like I need to run
lid on, City route
lid on, freeway route

lid off, City route
lid off, freeway route

Cooling plate + lid city route
Cooling plate no lid city route

Insulated box City route
Insulated box Freeway route

Coolingplate + lid + insulation city route
Coolingplate - lid + insulation city route.

I theorize there might be a way to get the best of both worlds, lid off plus insulation might = noise + no temp gain. We'll see. I need to re-run the tests I ran before though, since it's now winter and I'm sure my ambient temperatures are going to be worlds different than the controls above.

There are a few different designs for cooling plates. I like the aut design with the built in scoop. This is one available in the group buy forum

Then there are the cooling plates without scoops such as the carbing design. Coastal metals makes a very inexpensive one. However it doesn't go as far up as conventional cooling plates. Here is the link. It is $24.

I'm curious if just adding a snorkel such as the spoon would have a greater effect?

Oh damn. That AUT is nice, but way out of my budget for S2k parts. I keep telling myself that I won't mod the car, I have the Miata to abuse.

The Coastal piece isn't bad at all, it certainly seems to take care of most of the issue, routing air from it to the box wou;dn't be tough at all.

Dunno on the snorkel, might have to try making one from dryer ducting and heat reflective material. Low priority though.

I really like the AUT peice. However, I just can't justify buying anything purely for the bling factor. I would like to see some real world results. I don't think the pricing is all that bad if it does what some are claiming. (3-5 degrees C drop across the radiator). If it does this and helps decrease the temps in the stock intake box, i think it's worth it.

Yep, I'm with you Pete. Of course, i'm also the cheapskate considering dryer ducting snorkels, so maybe I go a little too far.
