What if I didn't buy an extended warranty? Will HondaCare still intervene on my behalf?

As I said in my original post, I don't have warranty, don't have a relationship with a dealership. I have since had my cv joints goodwilled as well after I demostrated the vibration on acceleration defect.

On mechanical issues, hondacare will only talk to you "after" a dealer determination...which costs up to $100 and is refundable if you make your case. Make sure your car is STOCK for mechanical issues, because you don't want to give them an excuse to blame you for the damage.

These are negotiation tactics, so be determined to shake the tree. Hondacare doesn't have to give you squat, and alot of what they goodwill is how the particular adjuster is feeling that day.

This strategy worked for me too! Thank you so much!
American Honda decided to pay 100% of the $1700+ cost of replacing the soft top. Just the fabric is new, the frame and rubber is still used.

The tear that I had before was just like this thread had pictured. I saw where the sharp edge of the elbow portion of a roof strut was rubbing against the fabric, causing the wear hole. I also noticed that after I thoroughly washed my top, the fabric folded down in a different way that didn't rub any more.

So now that I have a new top, I'm going to clean it regularly, to make sure the tear won't form again. I'll also tape up that sharp elbow strut with something softer.

Again, thank you for the strategy and thank you American Honda.

I have gotten alot of pm's over the last couple of years thanking me for this thread...it doesn't always work but you never know until you try it

Just remember that there is a difference in how corporate hondacare evaluates customer service vs how dealerships deal with it...two completely different mindsets.

Thanks for the info. Seems like the dealer fights you tooth and nail to fix anything and any tactic that can be used to get them to support thier product should be used. I am canceling my extended warranty. From what I have been reading the warranty is almost never worth it, which is the reason they sell it. This site has been a great wealth of info for me. Here's a nightmare story I had with honda about 8 years ago.
I bought a 2000 prelude in Dec of 99. I was thinking "It's a brand new honda, I just follow the maintenance schedule and I'm good." Wrong!
The manual said oil change every 7500 miles. Well I rack up about 6k and am about to head out on long trip. I figure I should check the oil even though it should be fine. I pull out my dip stick and nothing on it. The idiot light didn't go off so I must have had oil pressure and I guess the motor wasn't damaged too bad. I call honda and tell them that my car is burning oil at about a half quart every thousand miles. They tell me that a quart every thousand is acceptable. My jaw dropped. So you won't do anything? Nope. Needless to say I am checking every fill up now.

I have a used to me 2004 that I picked up with 11K miles on it. Approximately 2 years later I have about 48K miles and I have a thinning spot in my top. I've already been denied by hondacare as well as my local dealership. They've both told me my CPO warranty doesn't cover upholstery. I've been told I had a 12/12 warranty that did cover trim & upholstery when I purchased the car, but my 48K non-powertrain and 100K powertrain does not. It all seems like a huge waste of time to me.

i have a newer top on my car and to keep the plastic nice i made a "roller" for the window. just took a peice of about 2 1/2 or 3 inch pvc pipe cut it a little less then the length of the window, then went to walmart bought some fleece fabric (felt would probly work to) wrapped it around the pvc real good and stuffed the excess fabric over the edges into the pvc to keep the edges covered. took some tape wrapped it around the fleece on the ends and the middle, and done. put ur top a little halfway down put the tube in the window and put ur top all the way down. it ROLLS the window instead of folding/creasing it. it also helps it from scratching up. its a little hassle cause u hafto get out of you car when u wanna use it but i think its worth it for 4 bucks

I *just* noticed a small hole on my passenger side in the exact same spot yesterday. It's also wearing on the driver side and is nearly warn through. MY04 w/ 47k miles.

I will be calling Hondacare soon and will keep you posted on what happens.

In the mean time, should I not put the top town until the top is replaced? That may be hard for me, as this is my daily and I have the top down probably 90% of the time.
