Trade-in value on 01 S!
I wanted to trade my 01 S with 4K miles (it has, front, side and rear spoilers)w/Focal Speakers towards a 02 S, and my dealer offered me $27K for the car. WOW
Also, I purchased my car when this car was selling at or above full sticker. I wanted to trade just because the 02's have a glass rear window, I quess I can get use to the plastic!
Wait a while until the weather warms up... convertibles are, not surprisingly, a very seasonal purchase. Also, the low interest rates have really hammered used car values.
Down in the MidAtlantic, the used S2000 pool is drying up quite nicely. There were dozens listed two months ago, now there's less than 10. In another month, they will be all gone. Then the prices will climb back up.
Anyways, the trade-in value on 2001 S2000s is around $27K to $29K depending on who you ask. They are selling used-retail from $28K to $31K in my area depending on condition. Ironically, they are still selling new for over MSRP.
If you REALLY want that glass window, you're gonna pay for it. However, for my money, I'd sit tight, enjoy the Spring and Summer with the 2001 and consider trading-in late-Summer, if at all. Besides, if you wait until late Summer, early Fall, you might find a good deal on a 2002 that is sitting on a lot as the weather gets colder.

27k is actually a fair price. As a former import auto dealer please allow me to explain some facts of life. Wholesale on a new 02 is just over 29k (dealer invoice in other words). No dealer is going to pay as much for a used car as a new car. Therefore a dealer wouldn't want to "book" a used 01 for over 27k when he can buy a new one for just a little over that. Or looking at it from another perspective, a dealer offers to sell you a new one for 32,840. What would you be willing to pay for a used, albiet low mileage, 01? I can't imagine anyone paying over 29k, otherwise they would buy a new one. In that case, the dealer makes a 2k profit on the sale, not unreasonable and less than he makes on a new one.
Now notice I'm talking about what the dealer "books" the car for or actually puts in it, not what he allows on paper. Derryck says he got 30k for his 20k mile car but he doesn't say against what. If I went down today to buy s new Oldsmobile (perish the thought) the dealer might allow me 35k on my 01 S2000 against MSRP. But that's not reality because there are so many rebates, etc on Olds that anybody can buy WAY below MSRP (even way below "invoice") so I wouldn't REALLY be getting 35k on my trade (and the dealer wouldn't "book" it for that much either).

Some good points have been made. Trade in figures can be manipulated by the dealer to show more for you car. In addition to which I was trading my car in on a new M3 which was considerably more expensive and a car that dealers don't negotiate on. You should also keep in mind that you only pay tax on the difference after trade-in so there's a significant tax advantage that needs to be weighed out as well. On a side note... I met the person that bought my car and they paid $33.5. A good deal really considering that they got my OZ Supperleggera's, Proflow TB, Clarion CD/MP3 head unit with amp and speakers and a car that has been babied (except for the whole turbo thing).
