Transmission diagnosed
Late last week i posted that i couldn't shift into 5th gear. I dropped off the car Monday morning for repair. The mechanic found that the gear was destroyed. i also had a damaged fork and synchronizer. I don't know the function of these parts, but im glad that my car is back. Im surprised how fast the repair was made.
One question: They claim that the break-in for the new gears is 1000mi, staying under 4K RPM. Does this sound right?
serviced at:
O'Donnell Honda, Ellicott City MD

I can see taking it easy for 500-600mi or so, just like break-in on a new car. But 1K mi seems a little extreme, and under 4K??? Why not under 6K? Maybe because I had gears replaced also, not just a synchronizer.
I posted earlier this week the problems I'd experienced with both 5th & 6th (at 10,000 miles of non-hard driving). Took car in to dealer Tues. at noon and told them of the problem. The morons just drove it a couple of times and said they could not find any problem. I had already told them that I'd stopped at a light and was unable for almost five minutes to get the trans. out of 5th gear.
Still don't have car back. They called late yesterday and said that "Honda" told them to tear down the transmission and look at it. DUH !!!!!!

I have been having problems with the transmission popping out of forth gear. The first time I went in to the dealer we went for a drive and of course all was well. So they asked me to bring it in the next morning and we would try again. However when I went in the head of the department said the owner was in that night and was told of the problem. He asked if I was still there because he could get it to come out at will. The owner told his service guy when hearing I had gone home to order 3rd and 4th gears and replace them. Well they said they would call when the gears came in. Three weeks later I call to see what

mark,
to be honest, im not exactly sure "how" it happened. I was driving down the hwy, went to shift into 5th, and the car made the worst grind i have ever heard. I took me by surprise 'cause i knew i fully depressed the clutch. I took it home and parked it for the night. Next morning, no more 5th gear
The mechanic gave no insight into how it happened either. Just diligently replaced the gears and such, no questions asked. I guess i can't complain, but i would have liked to know how the failure occured.
Now i am DEFINITELY getting an extended warranty. BTW, i've only grinded 1st to 2nd a couple of times and believe that this is a completely unrelated failure.
