Have to agree with Russ also, yes it is tragic but at 20 most people do not have the experience to handle a fast car. I had about 5 or 6 accidents in my late teens and early 20s due to mistakes and mis-judgements.
In the last 15 years I've had one minor low speed impact.

You can't be charged with wreckless driving if you have a wreck.
Now, reckless, that's a different matter

[B]I know this is a dumb question, but the other driver who survived. Does he get charged with wreckless driving and manslaughter?

The article says "showing off", not street racing. I know that may not be entirely accurate, but 80 miles per hour on Roosevelt Blvd at C street isn't unreasonable. This is a six lane divided street (3 north separate from 3 south), and it can move as fast as the interstate. I'll agree that if this happened in the afternoon, that's a bit fast, but in the absence of a traffic jam, speeds don't get much below 65 there. I think the people from Philly will agree with that, particularly those who travel this route daily. If you are only on this road once in a while, it moves damn fast and can be scary - city driving at its best. I would cruise at about 70 or 75 in my pathfinder, and I wasn't always in the fast lane. In my WRX, I'd probably go a little quicker. As was said before, this is one of the most dangerous roads in the country. And I'm not saying these kids weren't screwing around, but I think this was more accident than cowboying. Also, I don't know if the condition of the roads in Philly are bad now. We've not had much snow, or any recently. I doubt that contributed much. Just my opinion.

This is so sad. It's hard (impossible) to judge, not knowing the people or the circumstances, but it just looks like the wrong place to be doing what they were doing. For God's sake, the driver died on the steps of a church. There's just no excuse for driving at those speeds in such a place. It really only takes an instant of bad judgement and unforeseen circumstances to cause a tragedy.
I do think posting this everywhere possible is a good idea. It makes some people reflect (see Mav's post), and that can only be good.
This could have been much, much worse. Note the caption under the last pic of the Spa (which in the pic is completely up on the side walk facing traffic, so he crossed into oncoming lanes at what speed?):
"Witnesses say the yellow sports car narrowly missed
passengers at a bus stop before crashing into the tree."
MichaelR, what's the posted limit? No flame intended, just curious.
My condolences to all the family and friends....

Pictures like these remind us how good our life is and just how fast it can turn real bad.
