DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR; DO NOT EVEN START THE ENGINE.
At this point every time the engine turns over there is a good chance that more damage is being done.

Have the car towed/trailered to a shop you trust. If you check your owners manual you will see that it says that you are supposed to shut the car off IMMEDIATELY if there is a flashing CEL, and that you are suppose to have it towed. You most likely have some costly engine damage.

Sorry to hear about this, and sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.
Listen to him! If the car is miss-firing and your CEL is blinking... it means its really bad! Especially if its not running correctly at idle! Does it sound like a WRX motor with an aftermarket exhaust? Your lucky the valve hasn't dropped, because if it does, you are out of an entire motor... not just new valves etc...

DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR!

[QUOTE=Ruprecht,Dec 13 2007, 04:26 PM]My point was that rather than him panic over the variety of costs guesstimated from folks here, his energy would be more productively consumed by getting the car checked out, and getting quotes from his market area for resolution.

Labor quotes will indeed vary, so my advice to him is not to freak over a 2k, 5k, 10, 15k

That really depends on what you find when you get the head off.

Make sure that any retainers that are reused are not stretched or cracked. Better yet, get new retainers and keepers, they're not that expensive. Consider AP2 retainers on the intake side.

Be sure to inspect the pistons and cylinder walls for any signs of damage.

You might want to take pictures and post them here on S2kI, just as a double check to help minimize the chance of missing anything.

Good luck!

ok just did a compression test, thankfully its not as bad as i thought it would be, cylinder 1 2 and 3, ran 210psi where cylinder 4 had a whopping 10psi. So obviously its just those valves, i would only need to replace those 4 valves in cylinder 1 right? I know it would be better to replace all of them but 210 seems about normal, also read the code with an obd2 scanner and read cylinder 4 misfire. i know it would be a good idea to replace all of them but if its not necessary i rather hold off on it right now. My mechanic said that the valves are only slightly bent and the ticking isnt that loud for it to break off the valve. He did say it was driveable but i would be getting horrible gas mileage running on 3 cylinders, im still not going to take my chances though.

BTW red_mx5 thanks for the help i really appreciate, and everyone else who tried to help.

edit: i checked and valves are alot cheaper than i thought intake valves $12 and exhaust is $20

ooooohhhh! I feel so sorry for you.
Just do as everyone says and do NOT drive the car. Tow it to your friend's shop and leave the rest to him.

try an Elise to see what a fast but fool proof shifter is like
That's funny because I saw some guy at the track dump his whole engine out the exhaust due to a mechanical overrev in an elise. Nice giant fireball from all the oil exiting the exhaust.
