vtec q
my bone stock ap1 with 94000 miles was much louder on the dyno with only the air box cover off than my friends ap2 with 40000 miles different gears, intake, test pipe, full exhaust, and a tune. He also only put down eight more wheel horse than me. I put down 212 whp, and 142 wtq. the vtec cross over just seems alot more intense. And i was always told the f20 made alittle more horse power but the f22 had more torque?
If anything, the f22 makes more power and torque, as seen on all dynos - 10hp bump in 02 with new ECU and again in 04. The fact that your buddy's AP2 made so little power with bolt ons is also further evidence that they don't add meaningful power since Honda did such a good job tuning the engine and intake/exhaust.
As I recall, 00-01 f20s typically dyno in the 190 whp range, 02-03s in the 200 whp range, and f22s in the 210 whp range. If you put down ~210 and your buddy hit ~220, I'd say the dyno was overstating both cars by about 10 hp - typical given specific environmental conditions and the dyno in question.
Also, comparing two modded cars for how they sound is pretty irrelevant since they are not the norm for comparing differences. Put an Invidia on an AP2 and a Fuji on an AP1 and it'll sound like a Buick in comparison.

JLUDE its more complicated than that.
The f20c makes around 120 hp at 5.5k, 140 hp at 6.5k.
The f22c makes around 140 hp at 5.5k, 160 at 6.5k.
Curb weight difference is negligible.
So the AP2 has about 20 more horsepower and that horsepower is available sooner - starting around 3k rpm vs 6k in the AP1. That, plus gearing and the lower torque map is why AP2s feel so much stronger below VTEC - they are.

When running the cars, the AP1 is only at a disadvantage off the line for a moment through 1st gear, once you shift into second the RPM's are staying in VTEC and the performance difference between the 2 engines is negligible.
I love both engines and always will. I'm content with my F20C and it's the more fun of the 2 engines to push. If all I did was commute in the city I'd definitely prefer the Ap2 for it's better low rpm performance and better suspension.

IMO, it just seems that as soon as you hit VTEC in an AP2, it's almost time to shift. But I agree, VTEC does seem a bit more noticeable in the AP1.
