Want more luggage space?
My wife and I like to travel with some of the creature comforts (cooler, beer, liquor, etc) and that limits luggage space. We were planning a 7 day trip and I was going to get a removable luggage rack but they aren't available yet. Since I own a Miata I knew about some luggage made by Atlantic Design that you mount on top of the Miata Trunk lid and had heard good reports about it. I ordered a set hoping it would fit an S2k and fortunately it does perfectly.
You can order one large or 2 smaller bags (I prefer the later) and a very soft pad that you put on top of the trunk first. Then you secure the luggage with 8 adjustable straps that hook under the edge of the trunk lid (2 each on front, back, left and right sides, hooks are rubber coated). Bags are 100% waterproof, very high quality, quite roomy and come with detachable shoulder straps for carrying.
Used them for 1200 miles. No problems. No damage whatsoever to trunk. Highly recommend this as a solution if you need more space. About $200 from Moss Motors or Performance Buyers Club.

mister_two has it right. For a picture (on a Miata) just click on the website he mrntioned.
Ivs2k--Regarding security I just parked car in a area where there were a lot of people and somebody would have to be bold to take the time to figure out how to get it off and then do it in broad daylight. Yea there's a risk but ther'es an easy alternative. It's pretty easy to take off if you open the trunk lid. Then throw them in the front seat and put the top up and reinstall when you get back from lunch.

Andrew - Thanks for sharing this......I am sure many have the same problem with luggage.
I have also had some luck using small duffle-bag like pieces in front of either seat (between the seat and the frame brace).
Did you notice any air-flow issues with the luggage on the trunk....Also, do the hooks scratch anything?

Spryguy, no there were no scratches from the hooks or on the trunk lid surface that I could discern. As far as airflow no problem there either, though I imagine it did lower gas mileage a little. And of course this was top down, with top up should be less of an effect. Depending of how full you pack the bags, there will be the ends of the tie down straps to deal with. You just have to tuck them in good or tie 2 of them together, otherwise they will flap around. Other than that everything was very secure.
