WRX or S2K
whoa there, 3 cats? jeeeezzz
Sorry but, I didn't even know that. I thought that was a myth.
But anyways, If you go with WRX, go with straight pipe, unless you're an environmentalist or something like that
Screw emission laws, ahah
3 cats, wow, think about straight pipe....

Don't bother waiting for the STi, I emailed them threatening that i am buying a s2k if they don't release it and they said:
"Thank you for visiting the Subaru Web site and for your interest in Subaru products.
Subaru is considering the feasibility of an STi version of the WRX for future model years. But, we do not have any definite plans at this time. If an STi version of the WRX becomes available in the United States, it would probably not be for a couple of model years. Since we are just beginning to market the WRX to the US consumers, it is too early to confirm the likelihood of offering an STi version in the US.
Even though magazine articles state that the STi version is coming to the US, the decision to bring the STi here has not been officially established yet. The magazines were a little premature with their 'announcement.' It was based on our statement at a press event that if the WRX is well received by the US buying public, we would look seriously at marketing a US version of the STi.
We appreciate that you took the time to contact us. I will forward your suggestion to offer an STi version of the WRX in the US to our Product Planning Department for their review and consideration. Thanks again!! "
hmmm...if an impreza has 3 cats, how much hp would it make if you rmove em?

Having driven family sedans in the past, I would not get a WRX over my S2k. The WRX is a great bang for the buck but that neonesque front end and the Hyundaish rear end just blows it for me. The interior is not all that great either but for $23-26k, can't really complain.
Since you're still fairly young and single, I would go with the S2k. Go practical later on down the road when you need it.
I can see that you're bent on the tuneability of the WRX, but like the S2k, it will get just as expensive if you want to extract a measurable amount of power from it. And if you want to do any cosmetic upgrades such as the STi headlamps and bumper with larger wheels and tires, it will add even more to the cost.
Now the S2k does not need the mods to make it look nicer as it already does.
But they are two completely different classes of cars. If you really need the practicality of 4 doors, then purchase the WRX. But if you do not absolutely need the extra doors and seats, then go for the S2k. You're only young and impractical once!

My situation was not too disimilar to yours. Fairly young, married, but no kids for a few years. When my wife asked me one day "If you could get a new car what would it be?" The top of my list was the S2k since I have always been a Honda fan. I did look around and the WRX came out at about that time. In the end I chose the S2k mainly because of lifestyle considerations. This is my last chance to have a little roadster/sports car before we start a family. After that sedan city. I'll still keep the S2k of course, just have to get an additional car.
When my wife looked to move up from her 2.slow VW golf to something with a little more power, we looked at the WRX again. In the end it came down to the WRX and an A4 Avant. For her the WRX was too lacking in the creature comforts- cheap interior, no HIDs, no sunroof, etc. Was the WRX faster & cheaper? Yes. Was it the right car for her? No.
Bottom line pick the car that suits you best. Heck I might even get a WRX when it comes time to get a sedan, or a EVO, or a RX-8, or a G-35, or a . . .

She's doing great. Growing like mad. She's as stubborn as her mother and as engaging as her old man.
As of today, there are simple mods available for the WRX that'll outrun my stock S2000 and your modded M3 without the aid of a software upgrade.
Didn't realize that the aftermarket stuff is now available...I just remember reading somewhere about scuby guys waiting for some stuff to show up on our shores. I'm not an avid follower of the tuning scene on anything but M3's and S2k's, though. Either way, whether today or tomorrow, I there will be a load of wrx's running around town embarrassing unsuspecting sports cars.
I agree that it's ugly, but it's a car I respect, especially if it's modded.
Yes and yes, that was the point of my original post. But in your prior post, you referred to the scuby as a Hugo Boss suit, and being 'sharp.' No need to get into a disagreement as to looks, as every one has a different take.
Its modding path comes easier and cheaper than our normally-aspirated engines -you will be seeing a lot of fast WRXs in the hands of young punks who DO race on the streets unlike the S2000 and the M3 (although the young punk E36 M3 is already out there on the roads today).
Agreed on all accounts.
Watch out now. Get money, get money.
Yeah, no kidding. I'm seriously thinking this:

I'm flying out to Active Autowerks in three weeks to test drive the M3 Sedan pictured there. I'm pretty excited.
-As a side note, had I gotten the WRX, I know the one car I would absolutely love to smoke is the S4 and all those dudes on Audiworld who thinks their car is faster than shit. Damn, that'd be frickin' hilarious.
I think the S4 is a great car. I didn't buy one b/c I would have to hang out at audiworld.
Peace.

With all these comments about the WRX being ugly, true its not the best looking car out there...
But, we all need to remember that styling is an opinion... granted that most people don't like the look of the WRX...
I chose the wagon, whose styling is a bit more conservative (except for the front end) than the sedan. My primary goal in the purchase was a low cost, low attention car that could still get up and go...
As with any cars, there are people that will like and dislike the styling. My S2000 got many remarks of "looking like a cross between a Civic and a Miata". Of course, I personally loved the look of the way the front end got really wide as you approached the nose.
My C5 styling did NOTHING for me over a C4, but the interior improvements were worth it over a C4.
One reason I didn't wait for an RSX Type S was because its styling (like all the Acuras except the NSX) did totally nothing for me. But there are people that say the RSX looks awesome...
so, lets just remember that styling is in the eye of the beholder. I can't say I am a fan of the 2002 BMW 3 series either, but it does have some improvements over the 01 that my girlfriend has that would make me consider it...

Obviously this is a very subjective situation. I considered both but got the S2000. The final determining factor was the fact that I'm single so now is the time for the S. However if/when the STI or Evo VII come to America then all bets may be off.
