I know the helm has you checking the 02 1st, before looking at the convertor. I've also seen multiple convertor failures that then damaged the 02 sensor. Pull the sensor out of the convertor and have a look. If the sensor is bent, you'll be needing both components.

Hecash is on his 3rd convertor in 100K miles. This issue shows up just about every month, it's pretty common.

I gotta warn you about removing the convertor, your state may have a much nastier fine than others.

~BENT~
There is no O2 left!!
Pulled out the O2 tonight and there was no longer an O2 tip to speak of, along w/ plenty of cat material floating around.
Good call sir and thanks for your contributions....
She is parked at the dealer, waiting for me to make the call in the AM.

Thanks
Jp

cool...on a completely different note, something similar happen to my STi a few days ago. After "gutting" the cats. on the STi...I must have left some left over stuff against the piping....which I thought eventually would burn off with the miles, runs, cruising (?).

Well, during a "run" against an 02 M3..., I thought I pretty much lost my clutch as I was getting rattling and chattering coming from there. Upon further inspection....it was simply cat. residue...talk about 1/2 a brik of residue....

Yes, now the car is faster...damn cats!

Well let's just Honda didn't initially want to replace my cat!!
Short story...
They called and said I needed 2 new O2 sensors. I asked the service writer to check w/ the tech on what would cause 2 sensors to go bad and also let me know what the rattling in the cat was....
Next call, "nope all is fine, you just need 2 new sensors" I asked how that sensor looked, "fine, maybe a little more deposits than usual..." ?and that cat? "looks fine, nothing wrong w/ it"
I lost it, even pulled the "I'll get my lawyer if I need to" gun.
Next call, you're right, the sensor is broken, we are going to go ahead and pull off the cat... Almost lost it again... I was like I thought you already had pulled the cat, you said it looked fine, "well, we're going to pull the cat off"
So after a bit of bs the car is fixed.

Although think if I hadn't found the problem before hand I would have been paying for 2 O2 sensors. Gotta love other people working on your car...

After "gutting" the cats. on the STi...
Gutting the cats Kansas by 2007 is suppose to have emissions testing, then what??

Although so this doesn't happen again, my Berks test pipe is on the way.
