Hey guys,

My synchros are getting worn (getting gear grinds quite often). Is it possible to swap the 2004+ carbon synchros into my 2002 tranny?

Has anyone done it?

My take on it was they are different in size and not interchangable.

 

Not easily interchangeable as synchro rings are only sold with the gear sets, and you'd have to change lots of gears and shafts to turn your AP1 box into a AP2

 

There is something visually different about the trans case as well.

 

It wouldn't surprise me if there are some different bearing sizes used either. I'm not going to try and convert my AP1 box to a AP2. The parts are so expensive for gears alone it's not worth it.

You may be surprised to find out that new gearsets that come with the AP1 replacement gears come carbon coated synchros. The brass ones are being phased out in the replacement part supply in favor of carbon across the model line.

 

Look for a AP2 tranny, and swap it out. Ive seen them at the online salvage yards. Or just keep looking at the for sale forums here.

 

okay, sounds like I will have to look for an AP2 tranny then.
