A 10W-40 motor oil is very close to a 75W-85 gear oil in viscosity, I think I've corrected you before on that Chuck 
So 80W-90 should not be that bad, but if it is a GL5 (and not GL4) that can be problematic.

I think you did sent the viscosity data several months ago but darned if I could find it today. GL5, though is a hypoid gear oil and that's not spec for the gearbox.
Won't hurt to go back to a synchromesh gearbox oil type.
