Popping out of second gear
I have a problem with second gear. During normal driving, shifting from first to second gear, either the shifter doesn't go in all the way, or it pops back out into neutral. This happens mainly when the car is warming up so I'm sure it's not a driver's error. This does not happen all the time, maybe once or twice as the car is warming up or sometimes not at all. Second gear does not pop out from decel. I've never thought anything about it, but can anyone tell me why this is happening? Or if it's something I should be worried about? It might just be me, but I also feel like the shift knob vibrates more than usual as im climbing rpms in second gear. Second is also noticeably more notchier than the other gears. I plan on regreasing the shifter sometime this week.
My 04 does same thing. (Not while decel either as I already had TSB fix)
It started few times a month when warming up but got worse (1-2 times a day now)
I suspect worn syn, but not sure. So I developed a wierd habit doing quick double-clutch shifting into the 2nd gear.
I regrease the shifter, but no luck. I will change the fluid soon and will see.

If you're due, try the OEM MTF or either of the above. Just make sure you get the correct stuff as the manual specifies. I'd imagine a bottle of OEM costs about $10 and if you do use the OEM stuff and it works, then it was simply a MTF change.

I have the exact same problem. Mine DOES NOT happen during acceleration or deceleration. It simply happens during the first 10-15 minutes of driving when cold. Its as if it didnt go in gear in the first place because it pops out as soon as i let go of the clutch. I really do NOT want to replace second gear on my car. Have you figured out how to fix or deal with the issue?!
how can you suspect worn synchro when they were replaced during the TSB fix? i also feel if it was a worn synchro the car would be grinding all the time. My 04 does this too only during the first 10-15 min of driving and I am trying to figure out how to fix it or deal with it because I simply do not want to replace the second gear set unless absolutely necessary.

Hey guys, this issue is common and I believe for many of you there is a very simple fix. Before you spend so much money, try something very simple and inexpensive first, Amsoil MTF Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid.
I did a TON of research before I tried it.
Here are the two threads I posted about it and you can see how many people this has helped over the years. There's some tips on attempting to also 'rework' the synchro with the new fluid. My 2nd gear pop out was very, very bad, and after these fixes it's now 45k miles without a single one since. (108k on car)
