since i bought the car i have put on about 3200 miles, just waiting till i have time to get a service. i checked the oil level and it was a little low, so i added some, thanks for the advice everyone!

Changing the oil and filter the car requires (+/-) 5.8 quarts.

5 qts is a good starting point for an oil and filter change. Drive the car the rest of the day and check the next day and top off.

I'd recommend changing out the oil, since you can't be 100% sure of what he had in there.

Buying any used car and not knowing its maintenance history, I would be inclined to change ALL the fluids immediately. For your know, the last guy could have put in Mazola oil. And the "Mobil 1" sticker was a selling feature.

whatever you do, don't throw in 5.8 qt after a change. I let my oil drain for about an hour and I have never ever had to put in 5.8 qts. I top out at 5.1-5.2. start with 5 and check the level then add more if necessary.
