Nvegas, at times one needs to humble himself...grasshopper. we can all agree you are very experienced and knowledgeable as are MANY people on this board. we all appreciate people willing to help, but even when someone IS more knowledgeable than someone else in a certain area, it does'nt always work best to come at it from that angle. Nobody likes the "I am better/smarter than you" attitude, even if it's unintentionaly conveyed.(as it appears it might be) we are all looking to learn, but people want to say for themselves "hey, that guy is realy smart", not be told by said person. it is better to lead by humble example. please don't take offense by this, I am just expressing my own personal views. thank-you for your honest efforts to further educate on the alternator issue, I know i have learned alot already from EVERYONES posts one this thread, and will sure watch for "flickering-display" peace-out
agreed.

as stated before, never did mean to offend anyone.

I've seen some flickering in my cluster lighting. I bought an alternator today to keep as a back-up in case mine's failing.

BTW, I could not extract that there was any technical conclusion that is definite here, right? If one is factually identified, I'd appreciate having the findings posted here.

Thanks
if i were you, i would stop by either a shop that has the top snap-on charging system tester, or go by a local vw dealer, and ask one of the techs to put the "midtronics" on it. either will be able to see Ac voltage coming out of the alternator. and this you do not want, none of the electrical, especially the ecm, wants to see AC voltage. you will have all kinds of weird symptoms, that are all very minute. also test the battery with the midtronics, if its not above prescribed CCA, toss it. both the snap on, and the VAT 40, had showed that there was nothing wrong with the batteries in our cars. yet, the *lil box* as we call it. did.
and where did you get an alternator? and how much was it. the honda one was almost 900$. warranty.
mike went out of warranty, one week after all this. whew.

yeah, no conclusion yet. lates dave

Sorry to bring back old threads.

My alternator just died and I need to replace it.

Are there any good aftermarket ones out there with higher voltage output? Pep boys has one for like $150 but its probably junk.
