^^Dlg04 is right. As long as you are within the hash marks you will be fine. usually the saying goes, its better to be a little low in oil than to be a little over. This is because the crank can whip up the oil as S2000nvegas stated. This causes the oil to start to foam and your oil pump can't pump foam for optimal lubrication.

I have always checked my oil when the engine is fairly cold because all the oil has had a chance to drain into thte pan and you get a more accurate reading.

you won't get windage with 6 quarts, the design of this race engine puts the crank above overfill

oil pressure guage will tell u if overfill is needed. higher the rpm, the more oil in engine and not in pan.

oil starvation occurs repeatedly with lateral g's on the track with standard pan even with overfill in my car

Actually this is not always true. I believe that the manual specificly stats that you should check the oil when it is hot....not when it is cold. In this case checking it when it is cold will give you an incorrect reading(oil will read higher). If the designers count on a certain amount of oil being in the engine when the dip stick is read(because the engine was warm) then reading it when it is cold after all that oil has flowed back into the engine, will report a higher oil level than the designers intended.

Yes there could be some variation with the amount of oil in the engine when warm. But the designers have tested the system to minimize variation.

With this be a critical issue? Unlikely but it is not correct to say that a cold reading will be more accurate if the oil is intended to be read hot. You will read higher when it's cold.

as well you can damage the
catalytic converter with too much oil in the pan.
I am having a hard time understanding this one.

BTW 5.5 quarts for me.

If you have so much oil in the engine that oil is standing above the valves, the valve stem seals won't be able to stop oil from getting pulled into the combustion chamber. It could damage the convertor, from burning LOTS of oil. The car would smoke horribly all the time and take a few gallons of oil to do this.
