There are 2 OEM sec. reduction ratio's:
AP1 (F20) = 1:1.160
AP2 (F22) = 1:1.208

Nyther Posted on Sep 10 2007, 01:32 AM
"Changes the stock final gear gear ratio from 4.1 to 4.46 (AP1) ... snap... For AP1 transmission, this is require the use with AP2 final secondary gear shaft."
Put an AP2 sec reduction in an AP1 gearbox and you'll get a "final drive" of 4.27
I say "final drive" because those gears don't actually change but it would take a 4.27 final drive ratio to make an original AP1 driveline to behave like that.
1.208 x 4.10 = 4.95 (OEM AP2)
4.9528 / 1.160 = 4.27
1.160 x 4.27 = 4.95 (AP1 with imaginary 4.27 final drive)

Now.. AJ clames to change the ratio with just this one gear to 4.46
How does this work?
How can you just change one gear (of a set of 2)?
The distance between the shafts didn't change.
If the sec reduction shaft didn't change how can you make it mesh with another gear to create another ratio?

Mechanically kinda strange IMO.

Would coupling this with 4.56 or 4.77 rear gears act as a multiplier of any sort, or simply be equivalent to something like a 4.9/5.10 gearing?

Changing the sec. reduction ratio changes the overall gearing, the same as changing the final drive ratio does, so yes.

Besides that:
How can one change gear #1 without changing gear #2?

Sec reduction shaft & gear #2 are one, as in one part.
It may be the gear is crimped on the shaft, in any case not changeable.

Thanks for the response but I'm still unclear:

more trouble than it's worth? unless you couple it with a 4.77 rear gear set and get some sick accel

if their claim is indeed true and accurate, making the final gear 4.46...and installing it is easier than installing a final drive...

i am seriously considering this mod.

can anyone explain how/why their claim is true, considering spitfires puzzle?

IMO the new sec. reduction ratio is 1:1.265
But I don't understand how they create that without changing both sec. reduction gears.

It's like taking a 4.57 pinion and make it work with a 4.10 ring gear.
Okay.. that's a little over the top, but that's what they are doing IMO.

Creating a higher ratio and not changing gear #2 on the shaft, gear #1 has to be bigger, more teeth.
How does that fit?

Mirakle workers.. those people at AJ's
