"The AP1 tranny might be the better choice for F22 engine because its closer ratios make staying in VTEC between shifts easier, and it probably has enough torque to handle the taller 1st gear."

Just swap it in! If you self limit yourself to shifting around 8500 you should be fine. A few trips to 9000 won't blow your motor either, just don't make a habit of it. This is just mho.

AP2 = chassis code.
F22C = Engine code.

With the AP2 2.2 doesn't it have a different cam cover with an extra sensor? Or am i thinking wrong??

^That would be the DBW AP2. For the US it is 06 and newer. Not sure about those across the pond. Did you guys only get the 2.2L with drive by wire?

We never got the 2.2 across the pond, and dunno about the DBW F20... but I am sure they did get it!! I think i heard Japan maybe got the 2.2 as well... but that was a Wiki fact and isn't exactly gospel... but Europe definitely stayed with the 2.0 engine!! As I have one
