Is it ok to 'shut down' flow through IAC circuit? This sounds interesting and an additional way to cool down the intake manifold.

I 'tested' the sunshade by placing some extra I had on the hood of a Suburban while the hood was hot. The nonhood side had quite a temperature difference from the side placed on the hood, so the shade does act as a heat insulator of sorts. For now, I'll keep the makeshift shield as is; a portion is double ply anyway from the extra around the radiator cap.

Hey Tedster, this bud's for you.
My latest mod is the "snorkel". It's made from 6" diam. flexible ductwork. I took a piece of the thing on the left to make the thing on the right:

I mounted it behind the grill. (view from the front):

The following is where snorkel comes "out". Also, my final heat management mods, double wrapped intake tube, wrapped upper rad hose and the "rad mat".:

Finally, the exhaust heat shield (which I may later replace with more expensive and better performance exhaust blanket):

xviper, I was actually thinking about using those ducts to shield the intake tube... but I have yet to figure otu a good clean way to work around the various hoses that comes out of the intake tube.

I'm not so sure that this metal duct would have much insulating capacity. I removed the tube from the car and used the foam material that's sticky on one side and the foil on the other and wrapped the tube twice and worked around the 2 inlets. Then I duct taped the whole thing to keep it all together.

I have just acquired a lab grade hi temp thermometer which I have installed on the surface of the intake manifold just next to the IAT sensor. I'm just on my way out now for a drive. I'll take some readings along the way. I just wanted to see how this compares to the IAT readings you've been getting.

Readings of surface temps of intake manifold. For ease of comparison, I've converted to *F.
Ambient temp: 109* in the sun.
After 30 min drive: 154*
After shopping for 10 min: 181*
After 5 min drive home: 162*
Sitting in garage for 1 hr: 145*
