Oh wow. After welp I put an emoji followed by a paragraph. Idk if my phone is tripping but only welp posted? Let me go type that novel over again..lol

Did some research with the search feature but pretty much only found out f22 into an ap1 isn't worth it.

'02 s2k's engines blown. I was quoted at 6400 by the shop to replace it. But I'm wondering if I find a slightly used f20 if I could get it done cheaper. I've never swapped an engine myself but I'm debating it to save some money. I guess what I'm asking is the rate of difficulty for the labor; or if I should just let the pros do it. And a reputable source for an f20.

If I were you I would source the motor yourself and shop around for labor prices.

I spun a rod bearing in an F20C and bought an F20C with 111k miles with good compression for 2k shipped.
I then had a friendly cash only garage do the swap for $600. They broke the knock sensor but still not bad.

I then proceeded to part out my busted motor and got nearly $1k back for a net loss of $1600 and a bit of my time, but it was fun!

If you are going to swap the motor yourself you will need some tools. An engine crane at the least.

Bottom end, top end? Seized-up? Or just valves shot?

I spent $2200 on a super low mileage 05 F22 long block and swapped it myself. Think I found the motor on a S2000 facebook group.

$6400 seems high. Unless they're paying $4-$5k for a motor.

unless they are getting a new short block thats steep, even then if you are handy do it your self, I did it on my street car. Might take you awhile but you learn a whole lot if you take your time

edit: if its a top knotch shop I can see that price, sometimes to get the best you gotta pay.

Putting in an F22 is pretty easy, as long as it's an 04 05, it's better to swap in the the 04-05 ecu, but you can use the current one, just be mindful that rev limit is lower and going to 9k is a quick way to destroy the engine.

F22's go for about $3k

I spent $2800 on a 36K mile 2.0 and thought it was a great deal. Verified the mileage with the vin and checked under the valve cover and oil pan. All looked good. 6 month warranty from the junk yard.

This has got to be one of the easiest cars out there to do a motor swap. So if you are ever gonna learn to diy, this would be a good time to try.

$6.4k to do a motor swap is robbery, even if its a brand new block.

As mentioned, if you swap an ap2 motor into an ap1, gotta swap the ecu too, so you don't over rev it, and burn out new motor.
