The shop doesn't warranty there own work? Most offer a 12mo/12K warranty on work they have done. Who installed the head?

Unless the tech at the honda dealer is a complete idiot, nothing he would have done while adjusting the valves would cause you to drop one. More plausible that it was an err of the machine shop.

The question is, did Honda send the head out to the machine shop or did you? If Honda did it then I think Honda owes you a motor. If you sent the head out then I think you might be screwed. I'd go back to the machine shop. You bent valves from an over-rev right? I wonder if the machine shop replaced the retainers or used the old ones? If they used the old ones, I'd say one of them failed.

Most likely the machine shop reused the cracked retainers. I

so did they replace ALL the valves along with some machine work? if they did then they should have at least seen cracked retainers during the removal/install. the machine shop may not know how to spot a cracked retainer while it is still on the head. but if they were in possesion of a cylinder head sent to them by a dealer, it must be undergoing some major work. in that case EVERY single part of that valvetrain should have been broken down to it's individual parts and inspected. and in doing so the machinist would have spotter a cracked retainer.

i dont see any reason why the dealer sent the head out just to replace a few bent valves, leaving other still in the head. if that was the case, then i ask this; why couldnt the dealer technician replace the valves himself instead of sending it out to a machine shop? was that tech not qualified to replace valves? yet he was allowed to remove the head?
