Default break in oil change

I've been searching the forums looking for break in advice but had a specific question about the break in oil.

In the manual it states that the first oil change should be done according to the schedule listed in the manual. Looks like most people are changing it out around 3700 miles or so. I know that the break in oil seems to have high moly to help break in and during those 3700 you should use good quality 10w30 to keep it filled.

My question is whether time also is a factor. The manual states that for hard driving that the oil change would be for 3750miles or 6 months.

I bought my new 2004 in february of 2005. Looking at the documentation it looks like the car got to the dealership last year around july, august or maybe even earlier. Since bought it recently I only have around 1000 miles on it... but it has been over six months since the car got to the dealership.

Should I change out the break in oil for normal 10w30? How about the oil filter? Is time a factor for break in oil or just should I wait till I get to 3750 regardless.

Castor;

There is a WIDE range of opinions on this.

For warranty's sake if you follow the to the LETTER what the manual says, then your actions are beyond reproach.

If you choose to change out early because of your thinking, it will not hurt anything, just don't document it incase someone at Honda gets huffy about it. You are after all, acting OUTSIDE of the factory recommendations!

You are outside the 6 month window-so I would argue that you have complied with the factory "time-out" service interval. Change away!

There are many threads on how much moly is in the original factory fill secret sauce (from whatever source). You may want to include some "moly modifier" in you first early change, but personally I think that with the current crop of oils (both synthetic and dino), your car will be happy with any regular oil change, and ANY oil (within a recommended viscosity range)-just don't put Mazzola in it.

If you enjoy changing your oil, and changing it early makes you more comfortable-go for it- it's your dime.

You bought the car to enjoy it (and for some of us that means maintenance/mods as well as driving)-so ENJOY!

As far as for what I did, I'll never tell , but I practice what I preach and the car runs like a watch, burns no oil.

Regards,
BD

Give the "oil journals" a read in the Technical Forum. Road Rage provides some good advice that I plan on following.

I think the moly has more to do with miles driven than time spent in the car. The moly helps smooth out the surfaces inside the car, which also causes the car to run hotter during breakin. Moly helps dissipate that heat.

If I knew then what I know now, I would change Honda "break in oil" at 3 months or 1000 miles whichever came first with high quality conventional oil and with additional moly.

If I was you, I would change the "break in oil" now with Halvoline 10W30 GF4, Honda PCX oil filter, and one 15oz bottle of Valvoline SynPower Oil Treament to get extra moly protection for the next 3700 miles.

What you say contradicts everything every expert here on engine lubrications says...... what do you mean by "if you knew then what you know now".

DO NOT change the factory oil at 1000 miles. As proven by experts on this forum and elsewhere, leave the factory oil in at LEAST 5000 miles.

This is what RoadRage posted on Mar 2004:
" I would add a bottle of MaxLife Engine Protector - it has high moly, zinc, and phosphorous, which you won't find in the SL-rated oils. It is as close to a break-in oil as i have found. I changed my oil at 850 miles and went with a quality mineral oil with the MLEP additive. That way i figure I get rid of any residue from mfr'g out of the engine, while providing it with plenty of break-in protection. "

I bought my car Nov 2003, If I had read this early last year I would change Honda break-in oil at around 1000 miles with either Halvoline or Chevron Supreme 10W30 along with Valvoline SynPower Oil Treament, this OT has more moly than MaxLife Engine Protector.

I stand corrected on road rage's point. though he did not necessarily say that is what everyone should do.
