My 02 has it. If you look at the latch on the inside of the trunk lid, you will see a yellow section with an arrow. That is it.

I'll check my '01 tonight to see as I am curious as well.
Also I keep a non-encoded key (get it cut at home depot etc. much thinner that way) in my wallet so I can get into my car/trunk if I ever lock my keys in there. Also have my Valet key and a spare at home.

That wouldn't matter. You would be completely skipping the wiring and battery in the trunk if you connected directly the the positive on the main fuse block under the hood, and negative to the chassis.
Unless you moved your entire fusebox with relays and everything to the trunk and extended your complete engine harness to the trunk (I'd bet $10,000 that you didn't do that) then you should be able to connect a battery under the hood.
Either way, you're in now. Keep a spare key outside the car!

you are correct i thought you were just talking about the originial battery cables. but yes adding power from the fuse point would work because it would send power directly to the switch.
thanks for explaining it though

Thank you for the explanation.
Here's the view of my trunk latch mechanism as though you were sitting in the trunk looking out the back of the open lid:
I see no latch...I'm guessing it should be somewhere in there. I'm confused because I've seen many other cars with the release in there.
