Default catalytic convertor needs replacing

My check engine light came on about 2 weeks ago. The car seems to be running just fine. I took it to the dealer and they indicate the catalytic convertor had gone bad. They are ording me a new catalytic convertor but its going to that 2 weeks to arrive, its on back order. Did anyone else had problem with there catalytic convertor? It seems to me that the Cat fail fairly quicky. My s2000 is 1 year old and is stock. On a good note, they did do the TSB 54 and replace the clutch.

My cat seperated on the inside, which damaged my secondary O2 sensor (which set my engine light off). The cause was never really found, but extra vibration from forced induction was assumed. That's weird that your's went out, Eddie. The car will drive fine with the light on, btw.

just for grins, ask them whether the cat melted or if it cracked up/disintigrated. The current state of the catalyst inside the converter will really clue you in to the reasons for its failure. My car (the '00 Prelude in my sig) has a dead cat as well, and I'm fairly sure it's melted, which indicates that my car is running rich. My car has only 33K miles, so this is another case of premature failure. After the Memorial Day weekend, I'm gonna take a look at it and get Honda to replace it for me. Post some more details if you can find out, and I'll tell you what I know.

i just had mine replaced last week. got the part in 2 days thanks to my speedy service adviser. if you are still waiting for a cat, Wesloh Honda in Laguna Niguel (or San Juan Capistrano, I forgot) has one they ordered for me (there were only 2 S2000 cats in the US, or so I was told, and I took both of them, sorry ) that i didn't use.

the car drove WEIRD with the cat problem - as if it had no VTEC cam!

Get a test pipe and forget about the CAT.

I wanted to revive this thread to document another CEL caused by a melted cat that also melted the secondary 02 sensor.

The initial indication that I had a problem was the Check Engine Light(CEL). The other problem that most people haven't documented was a definite performance problem while VTECing. The acceleration would stutter as if the exhaust flow was being restricted or if VTEC was being engaged and disengaged.

The dealer here in Houston, David McDavid, overnighted a new cat (TWICE) They made up for it by compensating me with a rental car for the trouble. On day 2, they had everything fixed and the car is running much better again.

The emmisions warranty is 80k and will cover the catalytic converter replacement which is approx $950. The basic or extended warranty will cover the burned out 02 sensor ($180).

This would be an emissions thing right? 8 years or 80,000 miles it's covered under warranty.
