Default Check Engine Light.. Bad valve seats?

Im a newer s2k owner. I own a 2001 practically stock , 38k miles. Last week my check engine light came on so I pulled the codes. Misfire
on cylinder 1,2, and 4. The car seems to drive fine but idles rough and shaky at times. Besides that when idling sometimes you can hear a very faint ticking noise. I proceded with changing the spark plugs still no luck. Brought it to a local shop that didnt have too much experience with s2000's but I am new to the area (pensacola) so not to sure where to bring it. They diagnosed it needed a valve adjustment which sounded right. They said while doing that they noticed and i quote "While adjusting the valves we found thay the valve seats on 2
cylinders have pulled out and we dont have the tools to fix that.". I really could just use advice on where to go from here, as ill admit im not to knowledable about cars, just loved what the s2000 had to offer. If anyone could help id appreciate it. Thanks

That doesn't make any sense, have them rephrase their comment. No way the valve seats have pulled out.

When I went to pick up the car he said I needed to have the valve seats repaired and that my best bet was to go to honda pensacola to have it looked at. And i asked how major was this and he said catastrophic, and its going to be over 1000$ for someone to repair it. Driving the car feels no different besides the rough idle which isnt all the time. And i apologize for not being knowlegable about this. Still learning. Tips welcomed, thanks.

Also called again just to reassure, he explained it to me by saying 2 valve seats were pulled out and were scrapping against something to do with the camshaft. If that makes sense to any of yall , because it doesnt to me and he couldnt really explain it to well.

No, that doesnt make any more sense. We are playing telephone here. Maybe there is an issue, and its getting lost in translation.

I would not go to the dealer. I expect two things will result if you do:

- it will cost more than $1k
- the issue will not be fixed

A possible third result is they will mess something else up on you when they work on it.

You need to find a local shop that is S2k experienced. Ask on the subforum for your area.

Tryimg to think of what this mechanic could possibly be talking about, one possible thing you could have is what is called cracked valve retainers. Its something that can occur on ap1's, usually associated with a mechanical overrev (downshifting into too low a gear). These cracks are something you could notice while doing a valve adjustment.

It doesnt cause misfire though. The fix is to swap in ap2 retainers, which are stronger. If they are cracked, and you dont correct it, eventually you are likely to drop a valve (valve falls into combustion chamber), which will result in a total loss for your engine. Its the kind of thing that is fine, until its not.

This is an easy job.

Saw your "pulled through" comment in the Pensicola thread, that definitely sounds like broken retainers.

I think you should pull the cover yourself and post a picture. If you do find the car needs a retainer job, do not let them take the cylinder head off the car.

Pick up AP2 retainers and keepers and tell the shop you are looking for intake retainer replacement with the "head in place".

Pulling the head adds major labor and many chances for screwups.
