Thumbs up Check Engine Light no signal

Hello, I own a MY06 S2k.

I haven't experienced any weird/out-of-place feelings on my S, and the light has been on for 4 driving days.

I've done my research here, and I didn't want to reset the light. The gas cap was tight as well.

So, I've went to my local auto to check for the code for my CEL for free, only to find that he does not get any readings to his scanner and tells me that the reason for my CEL could be that there is no signal coming from my engine.

Then he offers me a 85 dollar check to see what the problem is and tells me to leave my car for 1-2 hours.

Could he just be telling lies? Or does this really happen so easily?

The only thing I've done to the car is put an O-Ring on the striker to prevent squeaky noise (which shouldn't affect anything... i hope.) and cut the black/white speed sensor underneath the passenger dash... maybe a wire got touched/scratched while i tried doing this mod? I've taped the ends of the cut wire, and the mod had been done a week before the light came on... I also recently checked underneath the dash to see if anything seemed odd, but nothing to be found except plugged in wires.

Has anyone else experienced this or know anything about this problem?

Thanks!
-Seng

PS. I hope I have really done my research thoroughly not to have a simple link that leads to the solution.

The scanner they used doesn't work on CAN bus equipped cars.

Need to find someone with a decent scanner.

ah dang, was that the problem?

I was hoping it could've been a loose wire, anyone think this is definitely the case?

Take it to a Honda dealer and have it checked out. Best not to mess with shit like that.

There are two lists of error codes in most ECUs - one for currently faulted problems, and another for stuff that has previously faulted but has since cleared. The good news is that if the CEL light is now off, the problem has cleared itself, at lest for the time being. But it might return later.

I assume you cut the speed sensor wire in order to operate the power top at any time, right? This speed sensor wire branches off to feed the power top controller module as well as feed the ECU with the speed signal. So if you didn't insulate the cut wire well, it could short out to ground and mess up the speed signal to the ECU. This would cause a CEL light on the dash.

That sounds like the most likely scenario given the description you gave. I would put a wire nut on the end of the hot wire that you cut, then put electrical tape on top of that. Electrical tape wrapped around a bare wire end often works loose and falls off.

I looked underneath the dash, and the tape was still on it, but the sticky stuff on the tape became a bit liquidy, maybe that's what's up.

Think I can get those wirenuts from a local Home Depot? And do you by chance have a recommended one you use? thanks!

He should have at least gotten a code number, even if it is a manufacturer specific one. SAE J1979

You get what you pay for, try someone else.

This is a digression but I will be brief.
It's SAE J1978, J1979 concerns Mode #1 - #7 support.
If you are going to get a checker make sure it says it meets SAE J1978 requirements.
So many over-the-counter ones are a rip.

Ah, perhaps then it was really the scanner... I didn't remember reading about that in the topics, or probably overlooked that, heh

Anyway, today, I heard some electrical noises I think near the dash board for a good 20 minutes on the freeway, then ran over some rocks that rattled a bit underneath me.

And surprise! My CEL disappeared after 3 hours of parking! Strange

I hope it never pops out again.

Thanks guys!
