cryo'ing the diff caps.
004 41120-PCZ-013 CARRIER ASSY., DIFFERENTIAL 1 S2000 259.67. i was thinking about buying a new one of these (the part of the housing w/ the bearing caps), and then sending the bearing caps and bolts to get cryo treatment. i would save about $100, from the difference in sending it too comptech, and i wouldn't have to go without a car, for however long it would take for the part to get back. do you guys think that the metal in the caps are a good candidate for the freezing? it sounds like a good idea to me, or maybe i'm loco.
I would also consider cleaning up the surface and shotpeening. Much like you do when you linish and shotpeen conrods and other engine components.
The linishing cleans up casting dags and irregularities where cracks could start. Shotpeening compacts the outer surface and peens over possible inclusions where cracks could start.
Also, cracktest the lot before you start to make sure you dont spend lots of money on something with cast in inclusions.

Shotpeening is pretty cheap. The problem is finding someone to do it. Contact race engine builders in your locality and find out where they get theirs conrods done.
You will need to protect the bearing journals with wooden plugs as the shotpeening can damage the threads and bearing housings.
The process is like sandblasting except they use lead shot (tiny lead ballbearings) in place of the sand. The process compresses the outer surface and "peens" down any irregularites. Ball peen hammers have a sperical head and come from the days when boilers were sealed by peening the seams with a hammer.
