Default EPS issue

Hey guys, I've got an issue with my eps, but no code is being thrown. The power steering works fine while I'm over 5mph but below that it goes in and out. Sometimes the wheel shakes violently like those old cheap virtual steering wheels did on racing arcades. All of the advice on the forum that I've been able to find says to simply reset the EPS but the folks at advanced told me the machine won't do it without a code to reset. Is my power steering going caput? Car is an 02 with 137.5 miles on it.

Thanks

Have you* Tried resetting by pulling the battery terminals for a bit? From what I've been told the EPS system is rather bullet proof.

i don't believe that it is bulletproof. and i don't believe that that there is a one fits all solution to this. i have my '02 in the shop (not dealer) as we speak for this same issue. it is not causing the eps light to come on, but the steering is getting so bad it feels unsafe to drive the car. now the people at fourniers automotive (orlando) say they are not going to just start replacing parts without real knowledge of what's going on, but they are alluding that it may be needing a new rack. yet all the posts on this site have said that it does not fix it. 4 new s-02's, and 4 wheel alignment done before all this. seems to be too easy to steer left, and too hard to steer right. billman had said to check the a-beam for bending? but i am pretty clueless as to how the eps works. is there like a gyro inside that balances? their first inclination was to check for cracked wires and dirty connections, which can lead to less power getting to the steering motor, but i don't think that is the problem. it is gnawing at me, because i do not want to give up on this beautiful machine, yet no one, i mean no one, seems to know why it happens or how to fix it.....

So they didn't know what it was, and despite their assurance that they weren't going to just start replacing parts until it starting working again, that is what they ended up doing, starting with the most expensive and most difficult to replace parts first, then working towards the cheap and easy to replace?!?

it would certainly appear that way. i feel that the electronics in the steering affect other parts in the steering. i don't think that it was a certain thing to replace the steering rack, but if it had come with the torque sensor as one part, that would have solved the problem fast. i did buy a used eps module to ascertain whether it were involved or not, it was 139$, so it was not that big of a deal money-wise.
