Default Power Steering Issue without EPS light

Good Morning guys,

Ive been having this steering wheel issue for a while now. It seems to occur more when the weather is cold. I currently don't have any eps light or codes on the cluster. What happens is the car seems to have no power steering at times. When driving straight, it seems to work ok changing lanes but when i try to make a turn, it would go in and out. Ive had to be cautious now turning since I'm trying to prevent a wreck. Ive read I might need to reset my EPS or replace the rack/pinion. Most of the members with power steering issues seem to have a eps light on which mine doesnt. Has anyone experienced any of these types of issues before. My car is a 00 with 158k miles and has not been in any wrecks.

Thanks in advance.

After doing more research, seems the issue is the torque sensor. I found one steering rack with torque sensor for 150 locally. Can't seem to find many used torque sensors. Anyone selling one by chance?

Also is it a difficult install? Seems I would need to jack up the car to get to it by the bottom.

Thanks

Yea the torque sensor can go bad without setting a code. You won't need the jack up the car at all as it can be reached from the bay. 2 bolts hold it onto the main rack assembly. Then you will need to loosen the TWO bolts on the steering shaft. One is directly above the end of the torque sensor, the other is about 6 inches above that.

Make sure to lock the steering wheel in place beforehand and mark the the shaft with paint.

I would try resetting the eps first though to make sure that's not it.

Great thanks for the info. Was going to try to reset the eps to see if that would work before but just in case.
