Flickering dash = bad rectifier.

Disconnecting the battery with the engine running is the best way to fry it.

Jump starting can also ruin the rectifier. Not the act of jump starting itself, but letting the alt charge a dead battery.

"Mechanics" disconnect batteries to test alternators. Technicians break out the voltmeter. Be the later.

How do you find this part? Used alternator or buy it new from Honda?

in my case they eventually overhauled the rectifier and it solved the problem.

Yes that's the right part. I replaced mine a few months ago, very straight forward job. Once I got my old one out I tested the diodes with a multi-meter, half of them didn't pass the ops check in the FSM! New rectifier completely solved the flickering at idle. My dash never flickered until last year when I took my first trip out to tail of the dragon. After a hard run I noticed the flickering, so I don't know if it's heat related or from continuous high RPM or just a coincidence, but after installing the new rectifier I have since been back to tail of the dragon and I still have no flickering, and this trip was hotter and I drove harder so hopefully that means it's fixed for good and wont be a recurring issue.
