Default Headlight Issue - need fixed for inspection ASAP

Hey all,

My 2004 S is low miles at 67k and has needed very little since new. Right after I get a ticket for expired registration my left low beam headlight goes out. No flickering or any symptoms it just didn't turn on. No big deal, figured I'd buy a new one and put it in before the 15 day window passes and problem solved. Both headlights/bulbs are original.

I put the new bulb and.. still nothing. To make sure it wasn't a bad bulb, despite the $100 price tag, I put the other headlight's bulb in (for those that haven't done this process, it's a decent amount of work for a damn bulb). Still nothing so I guess it is the ballast; I think this is Control Unit on Majestic but if anyone could confirm this I'd appreciate it. Lastly, I put the good bulb back in the right headlight and now... nothing. I guess I damaged the bulb but I've replaced a dozen in my lifetime, wear doctor's gloves, and didn't hit the bulb on anything as far as I can discern. How do I check the ballast before I piss money away on needless parts? Could it be a relay or something else? I checked the fuses, nothing there. Very frustrating and given it's winter I effectively have no car until I get this fixed since it gets dark by the time I leave work.

Swap the ballasts L to R including the part #14 wire. That would isolate the problem to the ballast or something up stream. Check the fuses with a meter in the admittedly unlikely there's a break in them that's not visible.

Thanks Chuck. Based on the microfiche it doesn't seem like too much trouble. I got the good headlight working again so I now have the option to diagnose with a swap. Wish there was more daylight; even in my garage with a spot light it's a little dark in there.

It was the igniter. Bit of a pain to get out but not expensive. Thanks guys.

In the S2000's case the igniter is external to the ballast, and is part no. 12 listed in the above photo (33129-S2A-J01)
