billman (and others)...any ideas as to what the OP can do to get rid of the overrev code in his ECU? My understanding is that it is a "perma" code in that it cannot be erased. Any ideas on what he can do short of replacing the ECU. Reason I ask is that I'm sure the boys at the stealership will jump down his throat and point to the overrev as a cause for any and all warranty work whether it be related to the overrev or not.

That is the whole point of checking.

It's not impossible. Even the slighest crack will send the retainer upwards on the keepers.

Thats what we were checking.. the actual valves wont sink because the valve spring is still seating them and the retainers. They will look sunk because the elevation retainer is what changed when they crack.. not the valve.

Bill, sorry if I'm beating a dead horse here. The way I understand it is that when a retainer cracks it "walks up" the valve stem. If this is the case then wouldn't it look like the retainer in the LEFT in this pic? Or is "walking up" the valve stem actually causing the retainer to move down towards the motor due to the cracking?

No no no no.

The retainer on the right has walked upwards on the keepers. That's why the tip of the valve is barely showing.

OK got it, after clicking on the pic in the gallery and enlarging it I see that the valve on the left is actually sitting HIGHER than the valve on the right. Just looking at the thumnail of the picture it is an optical illusion, to me it looked like the valve on the left was sitting below the hole in the retainer. Anyways, I fully understand now, I think I'll go check mine pretty quickly just for grins.

Dumb question #3, do you replace the valve cover gasket when you pull the cover to check the valves?

Nope, you can reuse the existing gasket.

Billman,

I have a question for you. You answered a lot of my questions 2 years ago when I overrevved, but I have new information.

Does this seem logical?

ap1. 2.5 years ago, I overreved, 80 to 2nd gear, clutch in and saved it.

with your advice, i bought new retainers and keepers and changed them out. the old retainers and old keepers had no damage whatsoever, but i changed them out anyway.

fast-forward...4 months ago, i had leakage as follows, 6%, 8%, 67%, 6%.

needless to say, i pulled the head off and took it to a reputable head shop.

head shop relapped my valves...the face was slightly warped, but the stem was fine, so he relapped all the valves. the PROBLEM was the exhaust valve GUIDES...most of them were warped.

could this valve guide warpage be caused by the over-rev?
