Keep in mind this pic is from an AP1. The AP2 retainers are different, and may not show the exact same difference as the AP1. I stand on my opinion that cracking an AP2 retainer AND showing no symptoms is near impossible. At the speed it would take, the exhaust valves would hit the pistons first.

Good retainer on left.............................................. ..Broken retainer on right.
does that damage the top of the valve stem?

[QUOTE=Jsmply,Mar 6 2007, 06:16 PM] I agree, Bill's opinion is one of the ones I don't question.

i just open the valve cover and inspected the valve as close as possible to see if there are any cracks but didn't find any. I didn't have a dental mirror so I couldn't check the underside of it. Anyways, can't tell if the valve is bad or not cause the nutz are still on. I will post a picture shortly and will post it.

Davizzle: let me know what you find when you do yours.

You can't see the underside with or without the mirror. The indicator is how high the top of the valve stems sit.

well its hard to see how high it is when the bolts attaching to the cams are on top of it. Unless I'm missing something.

Hard, but not impossible. Especially with a little bit of practice. The mirror helps -- not to see the underneath, but to see it from the side.

Get your eyes right over the top of the engine. It can be seen clear as day, as long as you know what you are looking at.

Don't remove anything but the valve cover for retainer inspectoin.

Billman, if the AP2 could crack a retainer, how would you tell? I only ask because you said the pic is for the AP1 and the AP2 retainrs are different.

I would tell because I know exactly what they look like when they are not broken basically same as AP1 retainers, just look for recessed keepers.
