I just got 4 04 coilpacks for a buddy for ~230 brand new from honda, f paying autozone 100 for 1

I'm curious as to why Honda sells the '01 coils for $89 a peice, and the '04 for $45? I'd really like to know what change they made internally. If you go by '01 coil prices, the autozone coil is a good deal being it's available the next day. They do sell a +04 equivilant for 90ish which is a ripoff.

I wish I would have known how much cheaper the newer coils are.
I know that any part the S2000 shares with other higher volume Honda models the price drops immensely, but parts that are specific to the S2000 are usually twice the price and crazy expensive. AFAIK the 04-05 coils are also used on the RSX and perhaps other moels, and I believe that is the reason they are much less expensive than previous models. I'm running the 04-05 coils on my ap1.

I have a 2000, stock motor, no bolt-ons. It had around 92k miles when I had a blinking CEL, multiple misfire.

2 of my coil packs (cyl 3 and 4 to be specific) went bad.

Not sure if these were the original coil packs with the motor or not since I bought the car second hand.

Replaced the two bad ones with coil packs from a TSX (K24A2 I believe?) and my car has been running fine, no CEL.

OPc, are you still looking for bad coil packs to dissect and inspect? I can send you the ones that went bad.

Great thread guys, interested to hear about testing results. I found some AP1 aftermarket coil packs for $18 shipped on eBay, but am a little hesitant to purchase them. After reading this thread I searched on the 04-05 coil packs and found an auction for genuine OEM Honda ones for just under $25 shipped. For that price I think I can afford to try those and see if it solves my idle issue (no CEL).

*edit*
purchased 4 and total with shipping was $86.29, less than 1 AP1 coil pack from hondaautomotiveparts.com.

To date, I have found 3 bad coil packs in 9 years of working on the car.

1 was in an AP1 with 140k.

Second one was an ap1 with 160k or so.

Third one was in the same car with 160k. So 2 packs in one car.

I have coils to disect if anyone wants them.

On left, AP1 coil.........................................on right, 2004-2005 coil. Note visual difference.

Looks like the coil winding is shorter. I wonder if they went with a smaller diameter wire, or a stronger magnet in the core? Could also be the FET/IGBT is faster.

To add to Billman's list, my coil didn't fail until over 100k, and I had a plug back out which probably took it out much sooner.

Neat. If no one else wants it, I could take apart and photograph one of them (preferably an AP2 coil pack).

If the question is if it runs then yes it does. I have an ap1 MY 01 and just put some from a 2007 before I read this thread. I also have a cel for misfires. It runs BUT it feels like the car is driving worse than before and I still have the cel on.
