iNGALLS ETD lower engine block bolt gone- is that bolt critical the engine
I was working the s2000 today- oil change, defouler, rear brake pads- and noticed that the lower 10mm bolt on the front of the engine mounting the ETD was gone- the 2 top hex head bolts were fine. I took a closer look and it appears the original threads closer to the outer side have stripped at some point and the bolt was gone- odd as I always torque to spec correctly.
At any rate, i found a replacement bolt (about 100mm long) that would thread deeper into the hole.
My question is, what does that bolt hole do otherwise- when installing an Ingalls ETD, you remove that lower bolt and replace it with the long bolt. Is that a critical bolt to engine performance/longevity? What does that bolt do? I'll post a photo when i'm at home for clarification but your help is always appreciated.
I can't figure why the bolt unthreaded itself? I suppose I could retap the hole and do with a larger bolt if needed.
thanks

The bolt is one of many in the timing chain cover but it is one of 2 large bolts at the top of the cover. No sure why they have 2 large bolts in the cover but there must be a reason. The threaded hole is close ended so you have a limit on bolt length and hopefully the ETD spacer is still in place between the cover and the bracket. Good luck, I'm sure you will resolve the issue.
yes…thankfully the large inch long spacer is still in place- I always keep extra bolts around and was able to resecure it. I don't know how long the bolt has been missing- I was just down at the dragon- maybe lost it there? Upon researching a little more, the bolt is threaded at the end and the threads closest to the outside are the ones that capture the OEM bolt. The ETD has a bolt that threads inside the block. I try and post up a photo, but as we all know, photo bucket is not happy with us.
