Default methanol ?????

I know of a guy that is a mechanic and we got to talking about intakes and other engine mods. He was telling me of his plans to add a sprayer/mister for his intake. He was talking about using windshield washer fluid because it contains methanol and spraying into . Apparently he has seen a similar set-up on two other Sentra SER spec.V. Could something like this be developed for our s2000? Would we see any benefit?

What is he smoking?

First, most windshield washer fluid is about 90% water, if not more. Usually there's some alcohol (methanol) to prevent freezing and ammonia to aid in cleaning added in, but not much of either.

As for getting methanol into your engine, it'd probably be easier to add it in liquid form in the fuel system. Of course, you're majorly messing with your engine at that point. Methanol, while being extremely potent power wise, is also extremely potent in that it burns hot and has a tendancy to combust rather easily. So be prepared to buy a new engine down the road.

Edit: Ignore me, I'm stupid.

For those with FI, though, it would make for a great water mister to keep the air charge cool...

WestSideBilly,

I'm sorry, but you are a little off. Methanol does not burn hotter, infact burns cooler than racing gas. It also does not combust easily. We use to run methanol in a few of our race car engines to stay about 50deg cooler. We also used it in one engine so that we could run a very high compression. There are 2 things that I don't like about it though, it really screws up your carbs/injection system if not kept clean, when it catches on fire you can't see the flames, and lastly you use 2 times as meth. as you would use gas.

As for squirting wiper fluid in your injection, I think that is probably the most foolish thing that I have ever heard...wait, no I've heard stupider...but anyways, I think that is a very very bad idea.

Just my thoughs...

Actually this works quite well. Many GNX guys and 3000gt guys have been doing this for years to reduce detonation. Check www.3si.org and search. Most washer fluids are 50/50 meth/water. Water injection is the most basic form with pure alcohol injection being the best. Washer fluid is dirt cheap and you can use it constantly. A lot of companys sell alcohol/water injection kits. Here is a link to a DIY one.

Search around and you will find tons of info.

Here are some stats I found.

Water injection: 0.40 lb/min of water will vaporize, cooling the air down from 150 F to 109 F.

Methanol:
100%: 1.08 lb/min of methanol will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 96 F.
50%: 0.55 lb/min of methanol/water will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 107 F

Ethanol:
100%: 1.26 lb/min of ethanol will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 100 F.
50%: 0.57 lb/min of ethanol/water will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 108 F

Isopropyl:
70%: 0.76 lb/min of alcohol will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 107 F.
91%: 1.14 lb/min of alcohol will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 104 F.
100: 1.50 lb/min of alcohol will vaporize, cooling the air from 150 F to 102 F.
