Not too long ago my CEL popped up and came up with random misfires on all cylinders. I had recently changed my valves due to a misshift but never changed or checked my retainers or adjusted my valves. I tried everything on the list and nothing. finally a member from here stated that his CEL was because he had a cracked retainer, i checked my retainers and yezzir, a retainer was cracked. So I bought ap2 retainers w/ keepers and adjusted my valves and the problem when away. My engine was running like crap, felt like it was gonna give up in any moment.

Might want to put that up on the list..
It was actually already there. Look at step 5.

I added cracked retainer as a reason to do the compression test in the first paragraph though.

But it was mentioned in the rest of Step 5.

seems like I've found a new cause of this, although a compression test as described in the first post could potentially show this as well. i'd been throwing all 5 misfire codes (p0300-p0304) while also having headgasket issues and I just assumed they were separate problems. fixed the headgasket today and my misfire problems seem to be gone.

btw, my headgasket issues and my misfire issues were only showing themselves at start up when the engine was cold and I assume the metals hadn't fully expanded. after the car warmed up it was fully driveable and functioned just fine.

i noticed that this thread says to do a compression test to determine if valves are leaking. i think it should suggest a cylinder leakage test for more conclusive results? if valves are leaking slowly, the cylinders might still have high compression?

Mine threw these codes this morning (0300, 0303 & 0304) car is running fine, smooth idle and the power throughout the RPM range is normal.

Mine is going in to the dealer on Monday, so we'll see what the issue is.

Flashing CEL means don't drive the car because further damage could happen. You should have it towed for repair. Go search for Flashing CEL and see what you come up with (when search becomes available). Google will work too. Search for "flashing cell" in quotes and S2000.

If you over rev'd the engine there could be bent valves.

I encourage everyone to read their owner manual from cover to cover.

Yes i understand that, it was flashing because the P1399 code most of the time it will flash because of that code. Most of the components to check are not just for the P1399. Which why i was asking.
