Not a safe situation.
Especially if you have a long breaker bar on the crankshaft

Hence BDC...

I know in 5% of cases it will stay at TDC. I'm trying to keep it simple here for all
Yeah, I know. I just wanted to show off the word "metastable". It's a cool concept.

BDC is the way to do it if you are smart, though.

Hey guys.. It was my car that Billman saved. I purchased at Princeton Honda. The car has only ever been serviced at Princeton Honda. Purchased at 33k miles. I am going to request the service history to see what work was done.

Honestly I lost all confidence in the dealership service. I had "misfire" codes and was recommended to change the spark plugs. Billman inspected and sparkplugs were new.. just not tightened. I should have gotten the picture after the last oil change, I got home and checked under the hood and the oil cap wasnt even tightened.

Forget that.. Billman all the way. Well worth the 170 mile drive. I would say that any used AP1 purchased with any milage should have the retainers checked and replaced with the AP2.. the visual difference is very noticable.

Car is running great. Im glad to enjoy it with the great weather we are having.

Billman, Ill see you soon for the remainder of my once over.

Rich

well...if this car had retainer damage due to overrev...

wouldn't you suspect there is further damage to the valves, or valve guides?

my overrev produced ZERO retainer damage, but i replaced them anyway....2 years later, I have low compression...there was warped valve face and warped valve guides that I had to relap and replace. Immediately after the damage, compression test and leakdown test checked out fine, but i suppose the damage gradually got worse over the course of 2 years.

billman, did you do compression and leakdown, and even if it checked out fine, would you recommend to re-test 1 or 2 years later? in my case, the damage was gradual...appeared 2 years later.

Are there other reasons thinkable that could cause F20 retainers to crack at "legal" rev limits?

Simply metal fatique?
That would be a design flaw, but I hope (and think) Honda did their homework.

Valve springs loosing their strenght making valve vloat possible at lower revs?
A valve vloating at lower (< 9000) rpm would be noticed in loss of power, right?
(Intake valve opened - not cosed yet - during combustion)

Anything in the rocker follower assembly?
