My stock setup started whistling noticeably louder when I installed a K&N filter. When the engine hits just over 3k RPMs it starts and happens in any gear.

I like this sound.

Is this a "trick" question?

It made that sound upon you lifting off the gas. I'm going to guess that it's either your typical clutch spring decel "buzz" (for which there is a TSB) OR, you have the "ringing shifter":

Other possibilities would be if you have a Vortech S/C, this would be the normal noise of the BOV when you lift throttle on moderate acceleration. It could also be a rattling heat shield.
