Default no vtec, redline at 8K, CEL for knock sensor

ok guys i have recently bought a 2000 S2K. im having some troubles with it. first off, vtec does not engage. second i have a CEL for the knock sensor. the car does have a rattle to the valve train, could possible be the problem. third, the car redlines at 8K. i was under the impression that the redline was 9K. also when i hit it in neutral, it doesnt bounce like a normal rev limiter, it just drops really far. sounds like it has shut off. the car is running really rich. im having a hard time figuring out what has happened to this poor car. the motor has been replaced and according to the guy i got it from it has had all of these problems since he replaced the motor. but he bought it with a blown motor so who really knows how long these problems have been occurring. im guessing that maybe he has some sensor wires crossed? not all the time but alot of the time after the car has warmed up it goes into limp mode and it wont rev past 4K. please help. if anyone has any information on where to even start i would really appreciate it. thanks in advance.

Carl

First off replace your knock sensor. The knock sensor retards timing when your air fuel ratio becomes to lean to prevent detonation or "spark knock" which can cause significant engine damage. Second if you know the car is running improperly then why the hell are you trying to redline it?
