Default Which part of my clutch system needs replacing?

When I went to drive my car this morning the pedal was unusually soft. The free play was about half way down and the clutch would engage very close to the floor.

Then when I got home, I inspected everything and found my clutch master cylinder to be empty. Went and checked inside the cabin and the master cylinder has wet black gunk on it. So thats leaking.

Refilled the fluid, and still not back to normal. (Didnt have time to bleed). Did the 20mph 3rd gear pull and no slipping.

Do I need to replace both my master cylinder and slave? Where is a good place to buy the parts from new that you guys would recommend?

Thanks in advance.

i would recommend just the clutch master cylinder...the master cylinder for the brakes has nothing to do with the clutch

I was thinking just the clutch master as well.

Where did I imply the brake master cylinder has anything to do with this?

90% of s2k clutch master cyls leak. You likely dont need any parts at all.

clean out the res before you fill it.

Bleed it (find my posts about it it's not cut and dry) and it will be fine.

It leaks into the carpet, its not harming the paint. Once the fluid is kept clean, the leak will stop completely. This has proven true on hundreds of s2ks.

Anyone with a leaky clutch master should start by changing the fluid, and keeping it clean.

I have only had to change one master, and the car had 200k miles.

Agreed. I had a leak but after a fluid change, the master cylinder stopped leaking.

It leaks only on the inside. None in the engine bay.

I did the fluid change about 11 months ago so I guess I should have kept up with the maintenance. Going to do the new fluid either tonight or tomorrow. Ordered the new clutch master anyways since it was only $75 shipped for new OEM. Pretty easy to swap them out anyways, and don't want the inside of my car smelling like brake fluid if it ends up not stopping the leak. My car has 150k on it now, so it wouldn't hurt I guess.

I do have another question though. Of course I do not like the soggy pedal, but I do like that it engages towards the end of the pedal. Instead of having to pull my leg back more to shift I barely have to in order to change gears. I found this made shifting quicker and easier.

Will adjusting the master cylinder length allow me to do this or can it only make the engagement point closer to the driver? Will it introduce more dead pedal length?

Pretty amazing. Good old Honda engineering.

Billman, I've used your clutch fluid technique over the last few OCIs and pedal feel and function is great. However, I still get a drop of fluid every week or so forming on the master piston in the footwell. Is that normal?
