Default Problems in Vtec

Hello,

I have an s2000 from 2000, bought it 8 months ago with 55.000km. Totally stock (altough Im not sure about the clutch, it makes a noise when driving steady or when you press the clutch pedal)

Since the last week the engine holds in when in vtec, it "feels" like its going in and out. I feel an speed burst and then it slows down.

Last month I cheched my engine oil and is was quite low, I filled it with 1.5 liter. When I checked it again this week I saw the car has used some oil but the indicator was above the low marking.

Do you know what this can be? Has this something todo with the low oil? Or can it also be my clutch or lets say air intake or a bad spark plug?

Thank you!

could be map sensor, plugs, injectors, low oil would cause vtec not to kick in but still u should always have ur oil at the full mark. ur clutch could be throw out bearing, pressure plate or just mabe it has been replaced and put in wrong. i know this would be the first things i would look at.

The VTEC won't engage if the oil PRESSURE is to low or if the car is not warmed up enough. I have heard of it not engaging but not cutting in and out.

There is also a soleniod that engages the VTEC. I am not sure how to check that but I am sure if you do a search on here you will find some more info.

good luck

Hesitation in vtec is usually due to the map sensor, search 'map whack' and youll get some information, just give the map sensor on top of the throttle body one or two good firm hits with the back of a screw driver (not enough to break anything), just to loosen any debris that might be caught in there. Also you might as well go ahead and do an oil change and make sure the oil is in between the H and the L. Anywhere in the X's should be ok. Also try some fuel injector cleaner, worked wonders for me.

I have given the map sensor the "whack" and the problems seems over.

I hope it is fixed now

Also worth checking out, you'll see in front of the motor a solenoid for the VTEC system. There are three bolt that hold it to the motor, not the three on top but the three the push against the side of the motor. Take those out, pull the solenoid off, and you'll see an o-ring with a screen in it make sure that it's clear of debris. I was having problems similar to yours and then followed that procedure and that car is running awesome now.

It has EVERYTHING to do with low oil. Check your oil frequently, your MY tends to run rich and will burn more oil.
