Default Pulley problem on MY03

hey guys, im fairly new to this forum but i have a quick question. what is the exact name of the pulley located closest to the throttle body? it looks like a serpentine belt auto tensioner and ive searched but with no luck to an answer to my question. anyways when i drive i hear a rattle sound comming from my engine bay. and upon further inspection i see it moving slightly while making a rattle noise. anyways ive replaced the serpentine belt itself. but i think its time to replace this pulley due to the bushings cracked.

anyways im just trying to confirm the name of this pulley, and if this is a common problem with s2000s. im a fairly experienced aircraft/car mechanic. but this is my first s2000 and i have no experience with these cars.

any help is appreciated! thanks guys!

It is most commonly the Timing Chain Tensioner (TCT) making that noise. What year is your car?
We have been replacing a number of them in recent years and occurs in older cars, but I've seen a couple new ones with it as well.

To help locate it, use the old screwdriver stethoscope method....facing the firewall, check the block in the upper left corner closest to you. There is a brass allen keyed service/maintenance port and the TCT sits behind it. If it is noisiest there, it is a very easy job to swap it out.

Here is a link......Click Me and This
(BTW - these are both found in the DIY section of the Under the Hood forum. Lots of great stuff there.

Good luck,
Hockey

im almost 100% positive its not the TCT, this specific noise is comming from a pulley that the serpentine belt travels around. its the one closest to the throttle body, it almost looks like a autotensioner. its accessed by a alan-key. can anyone confirm the actual name of this part? thanks!

Which one are you referring to? The highest one is the tensioner. The one to the left is an idler pulley.

circled in yellow. so i was correct in assuming thats the auto tensioner? do these go out quite frequently? i can see it moving specifically and when i put my index finger on it i can feel the vibrations in it. im guessing the bushings are possibly cracked. its fairly noticeable when im driving

That pulley jumps around a little while running to keep the belt taught. They seldom go out.

i understand that, but once the car is warmed up and i drive around. i can deff see movement in this pulley while its making noise. i checked the timing chain area with my stethoscope with no abnormal noises. its a odd rattling noise as if the two metal pieces of metal are tapping on each other as the RPM goes up. i am about 95% sure this is the location of the problem. at first i thought the TCT was to blame but im very sure its this pulley

Have you taken the belt off and free-spun the tensioner? Maybe you can feel some play in it if you wiggle it? That'll be a dead giveaway.

I have seen ONE go bad, and I've seen alot of s2k's.

I'd run the engine for a minute with the belt off to see if the noise goes away.
