Default Removing top nut from shock

How do you take off the nut that holds the tophat to the shock shaft? I tried to do this on some buddyclub coilovers but the strut shaft just spins with the nut. Even using a vice grip with some rubber padding on the teeth could not keep that shaft from spinning. If anyone has some ideas as how to do this please let me know. Thanks!

With the stockers you use an allen wrench to keep the shaft still while wrenching on the nut.

With Koni Yellows you use a very small boxend wrench to hold the shaft still.

Hope this helps.

If you can take a pic of the top of the shock I can tell you what you need.

You need a shop to do it. You'll also need to use power tools to remove this top nut.

Also don't use vice grips on this, I would use channel locks simply because you can grip it better and the handles are longer.

you dont need a shop to do it if you have the right tools. people do this type of install all the time.

ukfinance pointed you in the right direction.

impact gun is your best friend. comes out in seconds, dont even need a spring compressor.

I assume you are using a spring compressor and have the spring compressed? If not it may do what you are saying, my Pantera did this. You can get a compressor for free from most auto part stores.

if you have airtools, it would make things easier, but it's not necessary. just use an allen wrench and a 14mm wrench turning in opposite directions. spring compressor would make things easier too, but again, if you dont have one, they are not necessary, but would make things a lot safer. good luck.

Why are you trying to take the top hat off anyways? On buddyclubs you can unscrew the bottom perch if you want to remove the spring.

looks like airtools are my only solution. can't use the allen wrench because it would just turn the damping adjustment knob. the reason i want to remove the tophat is because i have the newer version of the buddyclubs with the secondary spring hat. the previous owner took the secondary hat off in order to slam the car, but i want to put it back on.
