Default s2000 won't start... relay or starter?

I have a 2000 s2k with 130k+ miles on it. A few times in the past it wouldn't start and now it's happening multiple times a week. When I put in the clutch and hit the start button, I get one click and nothing happens. All the gauges work as does the radio. When it happened in the past, I called an old mechanic friend and he said to get something heavy and bang on part of the engine. So now whenever this happens, the only way I can get the car started is to hold down the start button while someone bangs my wheel lock against the solenoid. As they bang on it, the car slowly starts.

I took it to a mechanic and since it started perfectly while we were there, he couldn't 100% diagnose it but suggested the problem to be my starter. But then someone else who saw what I had to do said it happened to his honda all the time and it's the relay? Said I should just replace the solenoid. But someone ELSE told me the solenoid is for the vtec and to stop banging on it.

Can you guys please give me your expert opinions or direct me to the proper thread?

Thanks!!

You can replace the starter selenoid if you want or the whole starter ( it will be easier ). The Vtec selenoid has nothing to do with your car not starting.

Its likely your starter. Take it out and have autozone or oreilly test it.

Thanks guys! The mechanic I took it to said the starter is very difficult to get to... that'd it'd be a few hours of labor. So I presume it's not something I can take out in my driveway? Or is he trying to hustle me?

Thanks again!!

airbox, alternator, serp belt needs to be removed just to get the starter out, then it needs to be removed and wiggled out thru all the vacuums/heater hose/electrical connectors that are under the intake manifold. it can be a pain but is not impossible and deff is a 1-3 hour job depending on skill level.
