I replaced the rectifier and brush holder in my alternator at the same time (a much simpler job). Similar theory, it was already out to remove the starter and I was seeing the occasional flicker in the dash.

Great write up. Very helpful. The key points are : you need a swivel, long extender for socket, and take your time. I left the O2 sensor in place. No issues at all. If you are patient this job is fairly easy

How about you REMOVE knock sensor before removing starter bolts? This way when you take the starter out you won't break the sensor! Then once you replace the starter.......re-install said knock sensor.

This might work. But mine had gotten so brittle that I just brushed against it and it broke. I think the act of removing it might have been enough to fracture the plastic. Might be best to avoid it or plan to replace it.

I was able to remove the bolts without removing the knock sensor. I read that the plastic on the sensor is brittle and can break even if you are simply disconnecting it.
Worked for me but I see either approach as being ok

in step number 9) remove the two ground wires:
Where does the ground wire that goes up toward the hood connect to?
When I removed the bolt at the bottom for that ground wire, the whole wire just came out. The other end obviously has a hole where a bolt would go through. It wasn't connected to anything though. Help?? Thanks.
