stock intake
hey ya'll, could you help me out here
well we all know the stock filter is a cone type, albit a paper one.
yet when you take off the stock airbox at least for me the engine seems to sound different, sort of like it's not happy with the box off
is there a reason for this?
Am I crazy? (only regarding this question please, I know the answer in real life)
would it be more beneficial to have the airbox on due to under hood temps anyway?
I was just wondering cuase the intake for the stock box looks awfully restricted
thanks a ton for your help in advance

The sound comes from the warmer air that's finding its way into your cylinders. The stock air box pulls the air from around the radiator. When the cover is off, the air is going right through it.
The noise you here is simply the induction noise that the air box top, when on, insulates you against so you don't hear it. The design of the air box is to "tune" the sound (and noise) so it's more acceptable for "civilized" ears. You don't think that extra, seemingly useless, chamber is just for looks, did ya?
If you are not inclined to mod your car with a CAI, you might consider a "radmat". This will make all the difference in the world as far as keeping the air that goes into your airbox as close as possible to ambient. A radmat is simply a heat insulating material laid across the top area over the radiator. A search will reveal all kinds of information about it along with pics.
The next least "intrusive" mod to turn the stock set up into a CAI is the cold air snorkel from Spoon (pricey) or from IDI - Mingster (less pricey). The things mentioned so far will not produce any extra gains but will stop you from loosing the power you've already got to hot air losses.
Then, if you really want to mod and get some gains, you'll need to go with a "performance" CAI like AEM, Injen, Comptech, etc.
